Fun Ski Drills: CrabWalk
There are several forms of crabwalk drills, and the one I’m doing in this video will help you feel how your ski reacts when it is edged and rotated from the hip socket. See how I extend and rotate the lifted ski so that its inside edge strongly engages as I set it down? That ski shoots back underneath me as soon as it touches the snow. I have to actively retract that leg and get ready to extend and rotate the leg on the other side. Being able to engage the edge and then manage the resulting pressure is particularly important for short radius turns. Also, in short turns, you need to let your center of mass follow in quite a straight line down the hill. You can see that my body, from the top of my hip sockets, keeps coming directly toward the camera even as my leg extends, and edge engages. The various forms of crabwalk drill will help make your short radius turns more dynamic.
