Fun Ski Drills: Drunken Sailor
Drunken Sailor For dynamic skiing, you need to be able to extend and retract your legs. If you do this one leg at a time, using the “Drunken Sailor” drill, you’ll be able to pretty quickly get a feel for this. On a gentle slope, ski straight down the hill and balance with your weight mostly on one foot. Roll to the outside of the unweighted foot. You’ll feel that leg extend as it carves away from you. At about full extension, that ski will go flat on its base for a moment, and then it will roll to its inside edge and start to carve back in. You’ll feel that you need to retract that leg -- like pull your foot back in and up -- to manage the pressure as it carves back in. Playing with your feet with drills such as “Drunken Sailor” will help you get finesse with your edging and pressure management.
