Fun Ski Drills: Falling Leaf
This video shows a variation of the falling leaf drill, and it really highlights and enhances some important skills. Notice how I let my skis slip sideways down the hill while they’re pointed across the hill. This is a really good way to produce and slow down if you want to. If I pull my feet back and bring my center of mass forward along the length of the skis, I can stop my forward motion and then start slipping down the hill with some backward motion. Practicing this back and forth motion will really enhance your fore-aft balance. Notice that while I’m slipping back and forth, my skis are pointed across the hill. My body, though, doesn’t point the same way as my skis during the slips. I can point my skis across the hill but not my body by using my hip sockets. Having the legs turn under a stable upper body and at the same time adjusting fore-aft balance will let you ski smoothly with a sweet feeling of control. Falling leaf is a great drill for developing skills for smooth speed and direction control.
